Fuel pump connectors- how brittle?

I've heard so much about broken fuel pump connectors.
Yesterday my gas tank started leaking and my main worry was breaking the elbows on the pump when changing it. I thought I could lower the tank and leave the pump connected and in place, but it didn't work. So, out they came. I was pretty releived not to break them, but then I was worried about getting them back in. No problem at all putiing them in. Wiggling them out took some effort and patience, but I was suprised how little trouble it really was.
So how lucky was I? DO they get really brittle? Mine's a 93 if it matters. I did try to lubricate them both coming out and going in.
