I can't say for sure about the 93 and older engines since this same discussion on the NG900 board only affects the 94 and up engine block which have a different design on the oil pump and front engine cover.
It might very well be that when dropping the oil pan it is just not enough room to access the balance chain link on the 93 and older engines.
I have never done or thought about it on the older ones.
This is what it looks like on a 94 and newer engine.
You need to get in there with a dremel or a sturdy snipper to cut one of the links.
