How much fuel in the tank? Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: I NEED HELP WITH FUEL PRESSURE, Aerohead ![]() |
The first question would be how much fuel is in the tank. In '87, there is a two-stage pump; one stage pulls fuel from the lower half of the tank. If you have less than half a tank of gas, or right around a half-tank, and the pre-pump isn't working right, then you can have intermittent fuel pressure. Add some fuel.
Next, does the fuel pump run? Stick a voltmeter on fuse 14 - fuel pump. Measure voltage from the fuse to ground. Blade fuses have little openings in the back you can use to get a meter lead on. When the engine is cranking, you should see 10-12 volts. If not, jumper fuse 14 to fuse 22. The fuel pump should run - it'll run even if the key is off. Does it start? If you get 10-12 volts on 14 when cranking, but the fuel pump doesn't run, or if you jumper fuses 14 to 22 and the fuel pump doesn't run, you probably have a bad fuel pump.
If it starts, then I'd check the fuel pump relay - the contacts may be bad. If it doesn't start, look at the tachometer when you crank - does the needle bounce? If it doesn't, then the ignition amplifier is probably bad. What does that have to do with fuel? The ignition amplifier detects the pulses of the distributor turning. The fuel injection computer won't turn on the fuel pump unless the engine is turning. The only way it knows on an '87 is if it gets pulses from the IA.
It's a start (hopefully)
