Doh! Transmission Dipstick Fell In -- HELP!!

The plastic cap attached to the metal transmission dipstick cracked when I was checking the gearbox oil on my 1991 9000 turbo, and the metal dipstick fell all the way into the gearbox. I don't know exactly where the dipstick is within the transmission, and had the car trailered 75 miles back home to avoid driving it.
I have used a 27mm socket to remove the gearbox collar and make the opening bigger, but hours of fishing around by both me and my mechanic using several different magnetic probes have been unsuccessful.
This transmission doesn't have a drain plug. I've found a few things here and there on the web indicating people have used vacuum tools to displace and extract broken-off dipsticks, but no mention of anyone trying this on a Saab. I called a few transmission shops and none of them seemed to think this would work either.
The car is technically drivable at the moment(you can't hear the dipstick making contact with any of the gears), but I'm really afraid to drive the car until it's fixed, as I'm concerned that sooner or later the dipstick will work its way loose and spontaneously destroy the transmission, not to mention the possibility of causing an accident in the process.
Has anyone else had this happen before, and if so, have you been successful in removing the metal dipstick by means other than disassembling the transmission?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
Matt
