My son and I both have virtually identical 9000 Aero sedans; mine is a ‘96, his a ‘95.
We are having similar but not identical problems with our climate control systems. Because the central control units in the dash are the same for both cars, we have the advantage of being able to swap them, for troubleshooting, to see if the problems “follow the swap”,.or remain as they were regardless of unit in use.
We tried this yesterday, with inexplicable results. My car’s problem (somewhat different from my son’s car’s problem) is that my climate control will not run the AC at all unless the setting is at “LO”; set it any higher (62 or above) and the heat comes on full blast regardless of what the ambient conditions are. Concurrent with this is the completely wrong listing of outside temperature displayed below the speedo; which reads out as FAR too low (like when the actual temp is 70-75F, but the displayed reading is -20F).
I note that IF that outside reading were correct, the resulting heater behavior would be entirely appropriate. My local guy says the outside sensor’s reading has no effect on Climate Control function. I have my doubts; I think it may be involved. BECAUSE, disconnecting the sensor within the front bumper did not alter the overall climate control malfunction ... but only at first. HOWEVER, when we swapped the units between our two identical cars, the problem with my car’s climate control remained the same (if the problem were the control unit, the symptoms should have changed) THEN, when I re-connected the outside temperature sensor, I initially noticed no effect...until I started and used the car later that day, and immediately noticed that the climate control was working properly, AND the outside temp reading was correct! I thought my problem was solved.
But alas, no. The next morning, I started the car, the heat came on inappropriately again (the outside temp was 70, inside a bit higher, and the target temp was set st 68). I also noticed that, once again, the outside temp was not reading at all: the readout displayed “ - - - -”.
I just tried removing and replacing that sensor again. I still get no reading (though I did see the correct reading just yesterday). The climate control still wants to turn on the heat (and the back defroster, too), even though the ambient temperature is 75-80F (which would also seem to eliminate the inside temp sensor as the culprit –if it’s problem is the usual: a failed drive fan– as the inside temperature should surely turn on the AC, not the heat).
Does anything in the foregoing suggest a smart diagnostic procedure to anyone out there? I don’t want to waste a lot of money (they are expensive) on a new central unit if that is not the problem, as it does not seem to be.
HELP!
