First one is maintenance. A while back (mid-80's?), several of the Japanese companies introduced turbo models. They used teeny-tiny (to reduce lag) oil-cooled turbos, customers changed oil with cheap stuff every 15K miles and guess what? Tons of turbo failures. Put a real bad taste in the mouth of the Japanese companies who were trying to build an image of reliability for their cars.
Also by current standards, the 9000 is pretty lightweight *for its size*. Compare the higher weight of a 9-5 sedan which has less interior space. Cars just keep on getting heavier - things like the 65 airbags and 12-way power adjustable e-brake levers all take thier toll. ;^)
