Sorry, Mike P, that you had such a terrible time! Must be due to the salt they use on the roads in your area.
When I did mine, I removed the control arms, but I was also replacing end links and all other front suspension bushings. I have seen posts stating that you do not have to remove the arms when replacing just the rear bushing. However, I can't see how that could be done since there isn't that much room under the car (even on jackstands) nor that much room behind the end of the arm to work the bushing off/on.
Depending upon the age and mileage of your car, you should consider replacing the other front suspension bushings. What a tremendous difference in handling new busings make!!!!
