Serp belt split down the middle?

What's up with that? It only had 20K miles on it. It also started splitting on one of the side edges, again lengthwise. It was a Contech belt purchased from a site sponsor. I got a new one from a parts store and installed it. It's a Goodyear one with special ribbing. I hope this one lasts longer. The pulleys were all changed when I did that belt before.
I found this out by sheer luck. Was driving into work yesterday and suddenly the rpm's started climbing higher and higher, and the idle was racing. I tried to stop the car and had to use both feet on the brake pedal. It was like driving on ice. I pulled to the roadside and discovered the vaccum hose that goes from the throttle body to the IAC had pulled out of the TB, along with its brass connector. I had to MacGyver a piece of twine around the hose clamp and the TB to keep it in place to make it home safely. I used that putty stuff that cures into a steel-like bond to reattach the brass connector into the TB. So far, so good, though it's only been a day.
It was during the temporary fix of the hose to the TB that I noticed the serp belt was split. I guess certain things do happen for a reason, huh?
