As others note, there are lots of discussions on this. The autobox has it's issues.
I have both currently. The 5 spd in my '96 CSE is fine, although I really ought to futz with the linkage a bit. That has 115 K on it, I'm third owner.
The auto in my daughter's '95 CS is also working well at 139K with only occasional fluid changes by the previous 2 owners. It'll probably die at some point, but even then, I look at it as being cheaper than replacing the whole car which is otherwise quite nice. Plus, I got a good deal on the car, so what happens happens.
The two drive totally differently, part of that being the extra HP and torque in the CSE. The CS is still a very nice car, just lacks the punch. The tranny is smooth--if you pay attention you know it's changed gears (up or down) but there's no lurching or slipping.
If you can find an automatic car that has records and the tranny works well in, then it can be a good buy. But be aware that they *can* be a weak spot.
FWIW, try for a '96 or newer. They are better worked out and you get ODB 2 for some problem diagnosis.
