Definitely check the relays first. Look under the pass. side seat and you will see two large green relays. Switch them and see if the driver's side seat works. If so, then one of the relays is shot. Personally, I don't know if these relays are for the driver's side since, when I pulled them both out, the driver's seat still worked. But try that test anyway.

If still not good, make sure you understand that the seat will only work when the car door is open if the engine is off. If engine is on, then it doesn't matter if the door is open or closed.

If still a problem, then you'll have to remove the seat for further inspection. Read MikeC's post below on how to remove it. After it's out, turn it upside down or on its side (place a sheet underneath to protect it) and look at any broken or loose connectors. Mine turned out to be a broken wire to the seatback potentiometer (position sensor), so the seatback would not go backwards. There are also plastic tubes that the cables to the seatback run though, and these tubes break sometimes. There's also 4 separate motors for each movement of the seat. One of them could be binding or the plastic gearing could be shot in one of them.
