Any secret to fuel pump removal? 92 9000S....

We've run various diagnostics on our non-starting 92 9000S 5 speed and are reasonably sure that the fuel pump is dead on this vehicle (thanks Ari et al for the help there!).
Next question is how to maneuver the fuel pump up and out of the tank. We've got the check valves out, without breaking either one! Got the retainer ring off, and can pull the pump part way up, but there it appears to get hung up on the level sender float arm. I don't want to break the assembly on removal since I hope to try the pump-only fixit.
Any secrets out there? I plan on giving it another try this evening.
By the way, for anyone trying this, after two successful attempts it appears that the use of channel lock pliers is helpful in detaching the check valves. You can get a better grip on their sides and pull straight up with better control. Seems a little WD-40 helps to ease the in/out.
