How are you reading the RPM?

I ask, because my tachometer seems to read high. It pretty much has always displayed idle at 1000 rpm, but the emissions test read the idle speed as 900 or maybe it was even below that. It wasn't quite as low as 850 I don't think, which would be ideal, but at over 300,000 miles, who is complaining. I am sure there is a way to actually set idle speed, but I have never heard of this actually needing to be done. If you don't have vacuum leaks and everything is in proper working order, it should be fine.
On an idle related note, my car over the past summer started having a somewhat erratic idle, 'hunting' up and down a bit. Also, RPMs would drop like a rock down to about 500 when I put the clutch in to shift or stop. If coming to a stop, sometimes it would even die, particularly when cold. It was as if the decel dashpot wasn't even there (it regulates how fast engine RPM returns to idle with no throttle and out of gear). Just this past weekend, I cleaned out the Idle Air Control valve (top front of intake manifold) and throttle body thoroughly with intake cleaner, both were rather dirty and had not been cleaned for years. Idle is now smooth again and RPMs do not drop at all, they return to idle at the speed prescribed by the decel dashpot. Stock this is supposed to be four seconds, some feel this is way too slow and set it to two seconds... Anyhow, it's worth a shot to clean these two items out. If your idle is smooth and there are no other problems though, I frankly wouldn't worry about it.
