Start-up brake light on, unable to shift transmission

I own a 1998 Saab 9000 turbo(w/automatic)with 98k. Two days ago after starting the car, I was unable to move the transmission lever out of Park. The dashboard brake lights, which normally disappear after pressing the break pedal, stayed on. I then proceeded to turn the car off and manually move the lever into the neutral position using the car key (I read this in the user manual). Once I started the car back up, I was able to shift between gears without the lever being locked, except for Park (No change with dashboard brake lights). The brakes and transmission seemed to be fine, so I drove the car home. About 5 minutes into my trip, the dashboard brake lights went off. Since then the car has worked fine but I'm still concerned about what caused the problem in the first place, and whether the car is safe to drive. Any comments of thoughts appreciated.
