Working on the 5 series for the first time, there are a couple of mishaps I did which contribute to my losing interest.
I cracked the timing cover trying to remove it with one bolt still attached. Although it costs only $70 for a replacement. And it is on its way. Unlike the 2.3L timing cover where every bolt is on the outside and visible. The 5 series timing cover has 14 bolts on the outside and three accessible from inside the valve train. This dammed Bentley manual shows a picture pointing to only two of them. Yet the fine print says three bolts. You know how it is. A picture paints a thousand words. Not in ths case.
I also damaged the rear crank gear box pilot bearing housing. The 5 series has a flywheel almost 2 inches thick. So it is not possible to have it attached to the engine when I put it on the stand. Without the flywheel there is no leverage to loosen the front crank bolt which has been tightened to 318 ft-lbs. I put on two flywheel bolts, jammed a big flat blade screw driver between them as leverage to try to loosen the bolt. It bent the screw drive and dented the bearing housing.
The consolation is BMW parts mail order can be had relatively cheaply.
