Even if it's low mileage for a 9000 (say 150k), if some items such as the clutch and transmission haven't been replaced, it's quite possible they could need it in the very near future. Not knowing the mileage, it's hard to say what else could need replacing, but very few parts other than the wear items, are cheap, even if you do your own repairs. At a shop, a clutch job is $1000 up to $1600, transmission can be double that (though if you do both at the same time you only pay for clutch parts, not additional labor, typically). The engines typically are good for 250-300k miles, often more. I will just say that on my '87 with 329k miles, there are very few original parts left on the car, and nickle-and-diming me to death is a most appropriate phrase. Sure, maybe it can be made to run and look good for relatively cheap, but in my experience, the 9000 does not take kindly to being driven with lots of things that need to be fixed but aren't.
It doesn't have ABS, DI, or TCS, so those are a few less things that could need fixing.
On the other hand, if you can get it for $1000 and it only runs for six months, you still saved a bunch compared to a brand new car of the same caliber, and you get the fun (?) of looking for another car again. This is the one avenue of car ownership I have yet to pursue. I am trying the brand new car thing right now. But, I have often wondered what it would be like to just buy super cheap cars that run ok but could die at any moment, then when they do, just buy another. I don't think it would work for me, as I get too attached to things and don't like it when a bunch of features don't work or require my constant attention...
