if the one you are referring to is the one on the left side (driver's side in US) of the head directly below the heater hose connection.
On Trionic cars, this sensor is used by the ECU to cycle the coolant radiator fan on/off ('96+ cars, maybe even earlier), feeds the coolant temp gauge in the cabin, and probably does some other monitoring for the ECU.
Mine went bad with approx. 60K miles on the car. I've also seen posts by other people who have had this same sensor die on them. Typically, the signs of this happening are that the coolant fan may not come on or may not turn off, as well as the temp gauge may work erratically.
Note that there are two versions of this sensor: one with a washer, and one without. They are not interchangeable (according to my dealer).
