I had to replace the outer cv boot only (mine was ripped) and decided to do it with the axle in the car. I used Quasi's write-up. Getting the cv joint to release from the hub was a PITA (seems it's harder to release on newer models, so you may have it slightly easier). Be sure to have joint-clip removers as you will need them to get the joint off the axle.
I've done cv joints on other cars before, and I've always done them with the axle still in the car. There's less room to work with, but it's also less work to perform!
