Just finished my passenger side CV boot on my 95 CSE, and thought I would share my experience. I've done this on my 86 9000 twice using the http://www.quasimotors.com method without incident. However, the 95 is a different story. I've read circlip horror stories here, so my plan was to follow the Haynes Manual method.

I couldn't budge the axle nut. I was jumping up and down on my 2-ft breaker bar. I estimate I put over 380 ft-lbs of torque on it, probably more considering the dynamic loading. Eventually, the socket slid off, damaging the axle nut corners, and dinging the axle threads. That was enough of that.

I did the job the http://www.twinsaabs.com way. I removed the entire hub and pulled the axle, which was pretty simple. I got lucky with the tie rod, it popped out without having to use a pickle fork.

Once the hub was out, I pulled the tripod off with a three-prong slide hammer, tapping very gently. A three-prong puller would have been a better choice, but it came off easily. Now I could slide both boots off and clean the grease.

Once I got to the CV circlip and expanded it fully, the axle would not budge. The cirlcip was moving easily in its groove, and it was properly expanded, but no dice. My mechanic said they put the axle in a vise, open the circlip, and beat on the back of the joint with a blow hammer until it comes out. He said they hit it harder than you can imagine. After a little while of tugging and tapping, I called it quits there too. I made a judgement call here since my joint had just split and the grease looked fine. But I would have felt better if I could have taken the CV apart, cleaned it, and regreased everything perfectly. I cleaned out what I could and added new grease.

Reassembling was easier than I anticipated. After loosely securing the three ball joint bolts, I could tilt the hub and insert the tripod, and then fit the two bolts on the strut. The brakes go back together really easy too.

I think the lesson for anyone with a late model 9000 is to pull the axle and forget the Quasi method. And if you can't get the axle nut loose, you can use the twinsaabs method.

If I do this job on the driver's side, I will get a better set of circlip pliers that can "grip" the circlip some. I will also get brave about beating the back of the CV joint. Also, I'll either get a bigger breaker bar, a torque multiplier, or have my mechanic loosen the axle nut before hand.
