A new rumble to discuss Posted by dan [Email] ![]() ![]() |
So I went to work fixing a bad alternator and ended up rebuilding the engine with everything in the car. Success. Now on to the next issue. Ever since I bought this car (2 years and 20000 miles ago, There has been a low rumble, seemingly coming through the dash/upper floorboard, when accelerating. It was initially only felt/heard in first gear. I was told by the saab mechanic I got the car from that he had searched and searched but never found out where the rumble came from. I changed out the dogbone bushing for poly and the sound died down to actually only a rare, and under heavy load in first, occurance. It slowly got worse. I checked the lower engine mounts about 9month later and changed them. (one was really bad) That made little difference if any. Everything is tight. The exhaust was loose at one point in this mess and repaired...no difference.
Here's my final thought. Today, after puting the car back on the road, and having the normal
94 CSE power again, the rumble is back with a vengeance. It had been getting worse and apparent in second under load/on acceleration as well. I deceded that I would see what shape the shifter rod was in . It makes a similar clank that could easily be the rumble if "vibrated". there is play in the rod, but not in the bushing, which is new. It actually feels like the play is located where the rod comes out of the transmission. The car shifts fine in all gears but I think I am on to something. ANYONE OUT THERE HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM? If it is the shift rod, at the transmission, is there a remedy? I suppose that seal could be worn really bad but I don't have anything leaking there.
Thank you for your help.
