The engine cutoff was most likely the fuel cutoff overboost protection.
It might be the BPC, but as others have mentioned, it could be as simple as a sticky wastegate actuator. Also check the hose from the BPC to the wastegate - a hole there will cause overboost.
It would be helpful to mention the year of your car. There are two flavors of BPC (actually the early ones are APC solenoids, the later are BPC valves). The 900 type and early 9000 (APC) is an on-off solenoid, that can get gummed up. The later BPC is a variable position solenoid, and there can be a few things to go wrong. The BPC has three wires; the APC two.
Before I started going after the BPC with compressed air and solvents, I'd check the wastegate actuator. I'd also see if it comes back. If it's a just once thing, I'd put it down to a sticky wastegate.
