Sounds like you have the Nivomat (leveling, load bearing) rear shocks. These were mostly in the CD models, but not entirely as I found out my with '90 turbo hatchback when mine went!
If they need replacing, you have two general options:
1) Replace the shocks with new Nivomats (about $800 in parts alone),
2) replace the shocks with standard shocks, and also replace the rear springs to stiffer ones. Don't just put in standard shocks with your set up, you'll regret it quite soon.
This is all assuming that the '90 and '92 had similar enough set ups to infer from my experience. Good luck!
