Make sure the wire to the temp sender is still hooked up. Hoses leak around there and can corrode that connection as well. i have never had a temp sensor go bad until I bought my recent '94 9000...I nearly blew the car up because if was showing cool running and lo and behold, the fan fuse was blown. I just figured the car wasn't getting hot enough. Blew the left side off the radiator (why couldn't one of the hoses have blown... I had extra hoses!) Now, after finally getting to rebuild the head, just over a year later, once puting it all back together, the replacement temp sensor starts its readings at the mid point on the gauge. I have a new one coming. They are under 10.00 so you can't really go wrong replacing it.
