No subwoofer is really necessary when you've got good 6x9's in the back, which are almost as big as some subwoofers. I've found that if you power large speakers like 6x9's with an external amp you'll get more of that deep, rich bass sound then you otherwise would. Subwoofers are only necessary if you crave that big thump and there is no sense in spending the $ on them and all they require unless you plan on going all the way. The setup I've posted about before in my 88 had an a/d/s 10" dvc in a large box, that took up the majority of the trunk (lot of space in a 9k). a/d/s is a really high end car audio company so the sub wasn't cheap..but for SQ it was nearly impossible to beat.
Again, the reason I think that MB Quarts are such great speakers is that they focus more on SQ and clarity rather then crazy looking grilles, red speaker cones, lighted crossovers and 4/5 way speakers. You'll notice MB Q's are plain, black speakers and look kinda stock....but don't sound it. As far as price...they can be reasonable or outrageous.
I think I posted before about the wiring in the HK setup...if you're junking all that HK stuff and upgrading for the sake of SQ...run new speaker wire while you've got the car apart.
