The check engine light is about the only way the engine control can tell you something is amiss. In the later cars (like your '98), it usually means something is far enough out of whack that the car won't pass emissions. But it could be almost anything. Most likely it is a sensor that has gone out of range, but it could also be something like a vacuum leak that makes a sensor think it's out of range. Or just the gas cap doesn't seal as well as it used to.
You have the OBDII system on your car, so you can always go down to Autozone or Pep Boys, or most any other large autoparts store, and they'll let you use the simple OBDII reader. It will give you the basic fault codes, that will help some. Your Saab Indy should have a Tech II tool that will give the full, customized Saab codes, but the standard OBDII codes might let you know.
Most likely it's quite simple. May not be cheap, but simple. Anything from a gas cap seal that's gone to a bad O2 sensor.
