If the cars have different transmissions (one is 5 speed and one automatic), this defintiely will not work. Assuming both cars are 5 speed, a '95 Aero ECU will not be compatible with any '97 9000, because the 1995 5 speed Aero had Traction Control - TCS. No ECU from an automatic car will be compatible with a car with manual transmission, and vice versa. 1993 has a unique ECU. An ECU from any non-TCS car from 1994-95 onwards will work in any non-TCS car that has the same transmission (ie manual or automatic) from 1994-1998. I know you can interchange 1996, 1997 and 1998 (They are all OBD2), but as far as I know you cannot install an ECU from an OBD2 car (96-98) into an OBD1 car (94-95).

I assume you know about needing to add the BPC if you upgrade the ECU on a car that was originally lpt. My '97 CS was originally lpt, which I upgraded by adding a BPC and ECU from a 1997 Aero; it now has a Stage 3 ECU, that was in a 1995 CS prior to my car. So, it was created for OBD1, but works fine in an OBD2 car. OBD2 cars have a second O2 sensor after the cat, whereas OBD1 had only one before the cat. Therefore, if you take an OBD1 ECU and put it in an OBD2 car, it will ignore the second O2 sensor. If you put an OBD2 ECU in an OBD1 car, it will be looking for a second O2 sensor that is not there, and will give a check engine light.
