From the one page of the Trionic manual that I have (from chasing a similar boost issue), it says:
REVERSE GEAR (not cars with automatic transmission)
"When reverse gear is engaged, basic charging pressure [what we call "base boost"] will be obtained. This function is activated when battery positive, from the gear lever or reversing light switch, is applied to pin 13 of the control module."
If the reverse switch is providing signal when it should not, it will limit boost. The corellary of no reverse indication when you should have it may or may not mean something. A broken switch could be the cause, but a definitive test is pin 13 of the ECU.
