Headlight Relay revisited. Dead car again!

My '95CSE died again today. Went to turn the key and all was dead. Same thing happened as had happened to me earlier, and to my wife's '95Aero which is where I got the relay.
So, when my wife's car which was having relay problems died, I suspected the relay as the cause, checked and melted a couple of connections and swapped relays so I wouldn't have to hear too much grief about my repair abilities... Yaofeng suggested reexamining the relay under a microscope. I'm out of that field these days, so took another look with 8X loop and DID spot a crack. Thanks, Yaofeng.
What I don't understand is why should the battery be shorted out from a cracked relay?!? Consider me an amateur. I can understand why my headlights died.
I'll plug it in again, but getting tired of having a dead battery from some headlight relay issue. Would like to understand it too.
