Possible to go to coarser oil screen on pickup?

A neighbor of mine just bought a sweet 94 9000 aero with a huge sludge (coffee grounds) problem. He probably needs to just remove the entire top end and get a rebuilt one, but he doesn't want to spend the money. He has tried his best to get the sludge out of the engine, cleaning, scraping, flushing, but its working its way out...down to the oil pan.
He changes the oil, about every 5 days, because he hears valve clatter. When he removes the pan and cleans the screen, the clatter goes away. He has already moved the oil screen up a sixteenth or so, hoping for more clearance from the sludge, but it gets sucked up anyway.
I was wondering if he could go to a coarser (pre 94?) oil screen for a while, until the coffee grounds work their way out. He fixed a coolant leak that might possibly be the source of the grounds...as well as the previous owner never changed the oil!!!
Thanks all!
