Bill U. has it right. It should say in your owner's manual what the optimum octane is for performace. For our 98 9000 5-speed the manual recommends 92 octane. For our 99 9-5 light pressure turbo the manual recommends 90 octane. We generally run 89 octane in both but on occasion I fill the 9000 with 93 premium just for fun. Actually, the lower octane stuff has more energy per unit volume and theoretically should give you better mileage but I have never noticed any difference.
