Same thing happened to me, but hose came off while driving, temp got into red zone for just a moment. That's when I discovered the outlet had snapped prior to me purchasing the car. Hmmm...
Some time later a rough idle at start became worse, and soon I had a head gasket failure.
It's just not worth the risk. My guess in my case is that it happened to the prior owner and he just put it back on, but the head gasket was already compromised. When I got the car, it had this rough idle at start (among other issues, I had purchased it on ebay due to lots of other work that had already been done) that didn't go away with new DI cassette (which fixed other issues).
When it happened to me, for the second time in car's history I assume, I think that was the kicker, and the head gasket failure was sped up in time.
I would just buy a new radiator NOW! from eeuroparts.com with free shipping and just get it done. Headgasket is $800-$1200 or lots of your time.
