so long as the fan(s) come on and the car doesn't overheat. The temperature gauges of the earlier cars were quite sensitive: later (say 1994-on) Saab made them "lie" to disguise the fluctuations.

You can tell if the thermostat is misbehaving by the time taken to come up to temperature. Some people change to 82 degree thermostats but I wonder if that's really a good idea – the correct engine temperature is important to fuel efficiency.

Changing the AT fluid is always a good idea but you certainly need to do so if it's dark brown or burned-looking. I'd suggest every other service as routine.

As to other maintenance - your handbook has a schedule for this, and here in Europe it's based on a 12,000 mile cycle. North American drivers seem to change their oil as often as their undershorts so I leave that up to you, in the hope that you are one of the select few who would like the planet to last beyond 2030.

Going back to the cooleant temperature – from personal experience, head gaskets seem to go after about 100,000 miles so that's one worth keeping tabs on.

Other things to change on a regular basis are brake fluid and perhaps power steering fluid. I just had stainless steel brake lines fitted – judging by the problems the guys had getting the old ones off there is a potential rust/corrosion problem with the brake lines anyway but you want to get the water out too, so that's one for every 2 years.
