I don't usually over-rev, but did once by accident. There is definitely an over-rev cutoff, but it's not as violent (in my car) as fuel-cutoff.
The ECU shouldn't allow fuel-cut. The boost should taper just as you say. The problem was, before the ECU adapted to my driving, it would shoot too far into the red if I accelerated too aggressively, and it would fuel-cut. That's what I think might be happening to David. The high revs would only exacerbate the problem, because boost comes on with no lag.
Or maybe he is revving too far, or the BPC is shoddy, or the plugs are old/misgapped, or the DI is tired, or.....??
