GM has so many issues to deal with, and it is a company that doesn't seem to solve its problems well. I think *some* standardization w/ Opel and others is OK. A brand of car is more than the sum of its parts. But GM is not really good at that: a lot of their brands are pretty interchangeable.
I wonder a lot about the coming cars, but am more concerned with things like how the company deals with the DI on the 9-5 line, sludge (not unique to Saab, BTW) and the seemingly flakey electronics on the 9-3SS family.
We are looking at a wagon to replace my wife's Exploder and the choices are a Saab 9-5, a Mazda 6 and a Suby Outback. It won't happen 'til spring, but some of the issues with the 9-5 make us add the others to the list. Saab is the best of all the GM flavors, and I love them, but I'm not convinced GM is good for Saab overall. All the other GM brands are too much alike and too boring for anything but a rental car and I fear the same for Saab. I have visions of what I think of as a "Saabicallac." It may not be bad at all, but I doubt it would be a Saab in the way most of us think of one.
I'll probably get flamed for this, but in some ways I consider the 9000 (I have 2 of them in the driveway) to be the last of the "real Saabs." Began in '86, ended in '98, but was almost all Saab, even though the platform was shared with Alfa, etc.
