I have read numerous posts about how cramped it is to remove the starter, being wedged between the block and the firewall. On my wrecked 94cs I know it is next to impossibel because the n/a engine has a much larger intake than the turbo.
We know there are are only two bolts connecting the starter to the transmission. The top one you loosen from the driver side using a 18mm socket which is easy to access. It is the bottom one with a 17mm nut to be removed from the passenger side which is a little difficult to do.
This past week I assembled the drive train of my 94cde, lowered it in with almost everything installed. Then I found I forgot to install the positive battery cable. The cable has a bracket to be hooked up to the bottom stud on the starter before being tightened with the 17mm nut. I thought that over sight was going to cost me another half a day. Not so.
I found I can squeeze a regular size 1/2" drive impact wrench with a 17mm socket bewtwen the engine and the false bulkhead to removed the nut in 2 seconds. I know not everyone has an air compressor and impact gun. Just so you know when you send you 9k (the turbo version only) to have the starter replaced, the shop can do it in less than 30 minutes while it may take you several hours struggling with removing the bottom nut of the starter.
