Depends on how much 'overfill' is. I regularly run my 9K's with the oil level on the "X" in MAX. I don't think that's a quart over; probably close to 1/2 quart. Since the level on the dipstick isn't calibrated or linear, it's tough to tell how much over one would be.
Yes, you can damage an engine if your run with too much oil, but 'too much' depends on the engine. If the oil level is way too high, the crankshaft hits the oil in the pan as it spins. This whips the oil into a froth, and the oil pump can't pick up froth. The oil pressure would drop; possibly the oil light would come on, and for sure the engine temp would run high.
If you're running up around the X in MAX on the dipstick, you should be fine.
As to the smell, it could be a few things. If you smell it on only one side of the car, it has to be pretty faint; burning oil isn't subtle. My usual 'surprise' buring oil smell is from the valve cover gasket leaking. It doesn't leak a lot - it weeps a little, and that flows down onto the exhaust manifold and stinks up the place. You don't see a stream of oil, just a film. With a cold engine, take a paper towel and wipe the area above the exhaust manifold and below the valve cover (black cover on top of the engine) - I'm sure it'll come away black. Clean that area and see if it helps. It'll take a few days - cleaning it drops oily dirt onto the manifold, causing more burning.
