I don't think octane, which is an expression of the fuel's resistance to burning, would affect a car's performance according to ambient temperature.

High octane fuel essentially takes longer to burn than lower octane fuels, which is a benefit to high-compression engines such as Saabs, whether turbo or not. Keeps away those pinging problems. That's why your car's brain is trained to detune when it detects lower octane fuel (or more properly, the pinging that results from lower octane fuel).

In theory, if temperatures are low enough, then any fuel will take longer to burn. But as soon as the engine's cylinder temps climb to normal range, any such effect would be negated. I'm guessing this would take a fraction of a second once the engine's fired.

Possibly your friend's mechanic assumes that the higher density cold air is causing some extra pinging, thus causing the engine to detune, but I don't think it could make a noticeable difference in performance if true.

Conventional wisdom holds that cold air plus premium fuel equals the best achieveable performance out of the 9000.
