Typical progression of idler/tensioner pulley problem?

Have had an infrequent sqeaking-on-startup noise somewhere in the serpentine belt area for a month now. Yesterday, I think it briefly squeaked even when the engine was already hot. It appears not to be the crankshaft pulley, as the reference marks (picture below) are still aligned. 85k miles. Belt looks OK, last replaced at 65k miles. All pulleys still original.
I understand the next most likely suspects are the idler or tensioner pulleys...not the A/C compressor, water pump, power steering pump, or alternator. I ordered new idler and tensioner pulleys but have to make a long trip before I receive and can install them.
In the meantime, what risk am I running? What is the usual progression of an idler or tensioner pulley problem? Will it typically progress to squeaking continuously, before it fails catastrophically? Can I rest easy for now because it isn't squeaking all the time yet?
If it fails catastrophically, I assume that the belt will fall off and you will be stranded not because of no alternator, not because of no power steering, not because of no A/C, but because of no water pump which will cause the engine to overheat in just a few minutes, right? It is the overheating that will force you to stop, yes?
