What you describe sounds correct for how the knob should look. I cut the plastic knob on my CS with a hacksaw when replacing it with a leather one. One thing to watch for - the knob changed sometime around 1992; I think for the '93 MY, and the later knob won't fit properly on a 1991. The boot is easy to lift off. Once you're happy with the fit of the new knob, a tiny bit of epoxy on the side of the shaft will keep the knob attached firmly in place, otherwise it may slide up slowly with use. Don't know if I've explained that, but if it happens, you will know what I mean! LOL
