Generally speaking, when chain issues present themselves, the tensioner is not a culprit. The chain can stretch and become noisy, or the chain guides can wear and become noisy, or a combination. Often people will use the tensioner as a means to gauge the amount of stretch in the chain or wear in the guides, by taking it out and measuring the amount of extension on the tensioner piston.

In your 93, the real chain issue of concern is the sprocket on the crankshaft that drives the balance shaft chain. This sprocket was a soft metal in early years of the 2.3 (1990 to 1993), and would wear down over time. When this happens, the balance shaft chain can fall off and entangle itself in the timing chain, breaking it, and your engine. The fix is to replace the balance shaft sprocket. However, this requires all the steps and labor as replacing the timing chain, a not insubstantial bill from your mechanic.

If it's noisy on startup only, you don't really have a timing chain issue in all likelihood. You can try replacing the chain guide in the valve cover (about a $10 part) and it might quieten down some.

Otherwise I think your car is of the proper age and market value not to concern yourself further about the chain. Many a 93 engine goes for hundreds of thousands of miles with no attention to the timing chain or balance chain sprocket.

Should the chain break, you'll probably just want to walk away from the car at that point, but that might happen in two days, two years, or never at all.
