When this occurs, after you drive for a minute and the charging system comes up, what would happen if you shut down and restarted immediately?
Being temperature sensitive like that, and with those on/off characteristics, I'd guess the regulator or possibly a connection somewhere, which is affected by temperature contraction, until things heat up enough to restore contact.
Age isn't really a factor in this kind of stuff; could just be a flukey failure- If it gets to be a real problem, I'd try the brushes/VR swap.
I'd try to measure the voltage to the field terminal as you start to see if it does get the bump start voltage right away, though that's going to be difficult if it's intermittent. If it happens EVERY time it's cold, you'll have a better chance at diagnosis, though it's a drag to pull out the meter in the freezing cold instead of jumping in, turning the key, and driving off-
