Too lazy to build special tool. I tried a 6" C clamp as others have mentioned, but it seemed too awkward (bad angle) and I could not figure out how to assure that it would not slip. I tried to wrap number 14 (?) bare wire around the ears but there was not enough room to pull the wire and get it straight. I tried a small rope but wasn't sure that it would hold and what knot to use. I thought of nylon tie wraps as has been mentioned but could not believe that that would hold.
Finally I tried a chain from Home Depot that happened to be lying around. It was just the right size and didn't break when the pulley bolt was being loosened (full body strength pull on breaker bar from above). In future, I think I will go one chain-link size up.
I guess whatever method is used doesn't have to be so beefy if it only has to resist tension, unlike the special tool or SAAB tool which has to deal with bending forces.
