decided. I ordered a re-built control unit from http://www.thesaabsite.com for $175, 1 year warranty, plus $50 core charge but they will only take one. I now have 2 bad ones; it was worth a shot. Hopefully, the rebuilders have figured out the root cause of the failures and replaced the culprit. The following alternatives were rejected:
1) converting to the 95 and up single-unit servomotor system: A little challenging mechanically, especially this time of year, but a replacement would cost ~$600 and a junkyard unit would not be cheap. My son AndyJ thinks that his 92, while it was working continuously, was smoother than his 95 aero cruise control, but our 97 seems OK.
2) Buy another junkyard unit. One yard has 2 in inventory, but is asking $150. Even if one of them still works, it only has a 6-month warranty. I could likely find one cheaper and it would be a great excuse for a junkyard expedition, but much as I enjoy them, it's not much fun now with single-digit temps and the cars buried under a foot of snow. Besides, the unit is likely to go intermittent or fail, which seems to be happening a lot lately, as observed by Bill.
3) Time is running out before we make the annual christmas/ granddaughter's birthday trek to Ohio, so either 1) and 2) would add to the stress. Good luck and keep us posted.
