With the head removed the bottom end is obvious. You will see No. 1 piston at the top of the stroke.

All you need is to line up the top end. On the top end at No. 1 piston TDC,

1. Each cam sprocket has a mark at 12 o'clock, relative to the engine, standing on the passenger side looking across the engine.
2. Each cam shaft has a mark right at the first cam shaft hold down matching same on the hold down.

There is also a mark on the flywheel (12 o'clock again) lining up with same on the rear plate but you won't see it with the transmission bolted.

The 9k 2.3L engine is elegantly simple.
