Do some more research before replacing trans Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Be sure to tell them you have a 93, David Ingram, Wed, 21 Dec 2005 07:03:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I am not an expert at auto trans and have avoided them on my cars since my 1971 Volvo 142 (2-speed automatic, four cylinder carburetted pushrod engine, talk about s l o w !). However, it is very unusual to hear of the ZF automatic failing in reverse gear; reverse is hardly ever used, so there is minimal wear on the clutch bands and gears. What you may have is a stuck/sticking control valve (a small steel ball) or a broken valve spring (about the size of a ballpoint pen spring) on the reverse circuit, somewhat common problems. Has the trans fluid ever been flushed? Has it been maintained regularly? If not, gummy fluid could be contributing to the sticking valve problem.
If the reverse valve is indeed the problem, there is some good news: the valve body can be removed and repaired without removing the transmission. Many here have DIYed it, do a search on this bulletin board using search strings such as "valve body". Also look at the townsendimports.com website, I believe that they have a trans diagnosis flow chart. Also call Ericsson and ask them about it, they have been helpful to others. I would do more research before deciding to jump into a $3000 repair - at a minimum I'd try flushing the trans fluid.
Wishing you a better holiday season!
