Can't speak to the negative cable. As for the positive: The end connected to whatever that thing is behind the engine (starter motor?) had disintegrating insulation for a few years now. Is it because of the heat? At one point, at my request, the dealer's mechanic wrapped some electrical tape over the bare conductor, but that also started disintegrating after awhile. I could not replace the cable even though I had the new cable available for some time because access to that end seemed almost impossible.
But the break came when I removed the throttle body, battery, etc. as part of thermostat replacement. Replacing the cable was straightforward. I found it easiest to unscrew the nut on the starter (?) from the passenger side, with a socket/ratchet. It needed some feeling around, as you can see the nut with a flashlight, or unscrew it, but not both at the same time. I also tried not to drop the nut as god knows into what abyss it would fall.
I suppose one could make one's own battery cable, but I just paid the $49.90 to get the ready-made one.
