Hi Sue,
I think, like many cars, the experience you will have is a function of several things. The first is the previous owners care and feeding. the next is the geographic area that the car "grew up" in, salt water, salt on the road, rust producers etc. And, I believe, the last is the total milage. Sometimes less miles are bad! Moderate miles 80-120k usually means that issues have been found and fixed. Quasimoto has a good what to look out for, what to look for, what is different per year on his site.
Having the cars you are asking about makes it easier to speak to this.
I have two 9000CDT Autos, the ones that are often said are bad bargins because of TCS and Throttle Body issues. However, if the problem has been fixed, and properly, it's over and done. My 1992 purchased new had the issue at about 80k miles, the dealer incorrectly put in the "new style" DI, the one without the connector on it. This was not the problem, they then put in the Throttle body and calibrated it. That was 180k miles ago. Yep, 260k miles and still able to get to 100 way too fast. So I purchased a used one with 117k miles on it. My thought was to use it for spares. It looks so good and runs too well, it's a road car now. Got the VIN number before and went to my local SAAB dealer, service manager ran it and I got a detailed list of campaigns done. Also got to see the paperwork the owner had on replaced items, the throttle body was done so I purchased the car. That was 40k miles ago. still runs great. I like the trunk on a car. I did purchase a parts car a year ago, yet another 1992 9000CDT, with a blown auto. For $550 a car that runs and does reverse was too much to pass up. I've used the fuel pump from it and the nivomat shocks too. But that's me...
So then I purchased a 1994 9000Aero 5 speed. Low milage fun car.
I'd say that the biggest divisions in the 9000 series are:
before 1990 they had a 2.0 16 valve engine, don't go there
1990 they went to 2.3, great motor, but used the DI/APC engine management ok but not the latest. Also many of the parts are specific to the 1991-1992 only.
in 1993 they went to the T5 engine management, used until the end of the line, also changed lighting and exterior to be the same across the line (except the CD and CDE)
in 1994 they scrapped the TCS (traction control system).
I'd say a 1994, or newer, and condition with respect to above comments, would be a great choice.
