Generic PCV valve vs. SAAB PCV check valve

From reading about "PCV valves", it seems that they have an internal spring-based mechanism that regulates the flow to better match the level of intake manifold vacuum with the level of blow-by gas production. Under weak vacuum (load), there is more gas production and so a PCV valve will allow greater flow. Under strong vacuum (idle), there is less gas production and so a PCV valve will have a more restricted opening. But what is the behavior under boost---will it completely block the opening? Is the behavior unspecified/unknown? Dependent on particular valve model?
On the other hand, the SAAB PCV check valve is just a check valve---either open or closed. No spring-based variable flow function. That's why its so small compared with PCV valves. Is this correct?
If so, it looks like SAAB PCV check valve could be described as: less functional, less durable, more expensive.
