Well, the basics are fuel, spark, and air. If the car has been sitting, I'd pull the air filter cover off and make sure you don't have a mouse nest, or an air filter that's all gummed up.
When it comes to fuel, there can be too much of a good thing. After the plugs dry out, try it again. While that's happening (drying out, that is), pull the thin hose from the intake manifold to the fuel pressure regulator, and carefully suck on the intake manifold side. First, it should hold vacuum. Second, you shouldn't taste gas. A hint, OK, more than that, or it doesn't hold vacuum, and the FPR diaphram is leaking and you're dumping in too much gas.
Of course, make sure the plugs are gapped properly, and inspect each to make sure none look fouled. When in doubt, put in new plugs. You owe the car that much. Next, you could have one or more bad plug wires. The best way to check spark is to take a spark plug (not in the engine), put the wire on the plug, and hold the body against the block and look for spark. This avoids accidently shorting the coil to ground and damaging it.
After that, the timing might be too advanced to start. In the old days of points you could roughly time a car, but it's harder now. With a timing light, see what the timing is when cranking the engine. It isn't the right rpm, but it's a start. You could also try retarding the timing a hair, from 15 (that's from memory) BTDC to closer to something like 8 or 10 degrees.
It's place to start (pun only slightly intendended)
