engine dies @ 60+mph

Recently acquired an '87 9K turbo here in central Wisco, my first Saab. Love it; as a test of willpower, I drove 80 miles at 60mph and based on actual fuel consumption achieved 39 mpg.
My dilemma: the engine has a nasty habit of dying on the highway. I have just replaced the turbo bypass valve and had a 30K service done. The shop in Wausau thought the valve replacement would end my cutoff woes, but the car died again on the way home. It's going back for alignment work on Monday, and I need some ideas to give the shop. Here's more details:
* Kill does not happen on acceleration or deceleration, seems to just happen.
* All instruments on the dash go out, RPMs read zero but car is still in gear and going 60. The radio, however, keeps working.
* I can go to neutral and restart while rolling the shoulder.
Ideas? I would appreciate them.
