I spend over a year trying to figure the same thing out. Changed everything that looked worn. Put urethane on both upper mounts. Changed out the front engine mount that was badly (visibly)worn. The back looked great as did the tranny mount (which doesn't really "rock" like the others, but I was ready to change it all the same.) I changed the shifter coupler, which was badly needed, but the car still made the clunk on take off and progressively got worse. It felt like the shifter was rumbling where it goes through the firewall. I couldn't find anything "changeable" there so I was stumped. Finally, it hit me: the rear engine mount doesn't get pulled like the front one. It gets compressed. the front was torn apart, and though the rear looked really good, after getting it out of the car, I could compress the rubber easily by hand. The safety tab on the mount was getting pressed down against the frame. Some of these are filled with fluid, like a balloon, while many replacements are often solid rubber. I have installed a new solid rubber version and the sound has stopped completely. It is like driving a new car...I'm not afraid of breaking something anymore. That being said, I now hear all the other rattles and what-not throughout the car...just more to fix really. I hope this is all you have. the rear is the easiest to replace in my opinion. The tranny mount can be done easy enough from the top of the engine compartment, the others are easiest through the fender, with some action under the car too.
